A lush, dark violin with a sparkling E string and impressive clarity in the midrange. Basically a unicorn.

Description

I thought I was done making Kreisler models, but fate had other plans. I first made one at the very beginning of my violin-making journey, and then again a few years later. This time around, I was inspired by my luthier community (the Luthier Mastermind) to make another Kreisler model. Each member of the group worked on their own version of the model, in addition to a group-made version of the same violin, which was mailed to-and-from each maker to the next.

For my version, I completely redrew the outline and made an entirely new mould and templates to work from. I used highly aged tonewood, and the resulting violin feels like it’s already lived a long and complicated life.

At our gathering, it was enlightening to hear everyone’s version of the same violin model. They all had some basic similarities, like the dark tone, but each had its own unique character and playing feel. A wonderful learning experience for all involved. Building this violin again, and seeing how much rich variation was possible on the same form was inspiring; I don’t think this will be the last time I build this model.

I look forward to hearing you try this one!

Made from highly aged Englemann Spruce and 50+ year old European Maple.
